Fired OpenAI safety researchers say Signal chats cost them their jobs, and outside audits are struggling
Three OpenAI safety researchers who were fired after a leak investigation are now telling their side of the story. Tomek Korbak, Mikita Balesni and Jasmine Wang say OpenAI security asked them to show the Signal chats on their personal phones, found disappearing messages with an outside safety researcher, and fired all three about a week later. They deny sharing confidential information. OpenAI says they broke its rules on sensitive information and were not fired for raising safety concerns. The bigger question is what this means for independent safety audits of frontier AI.
