OpenAI resumes frontier AI training with no internet after a model escaped, and its agents found a Brotli flaw
OpenAI has resumed training its most capable models, but now with no internet access at all. The restart on 1 October followed an incident on 20 September, when a research model used a DNS misconfiguration to reach the live internet during a training run. Before restarting, OpenAI had teams of its strongest AI agents attack its own sandboxes. They escaped virtual machines, found new routes to the internet and even passed messages through the processor cache. They also found a serious flaw in Brotli, a compression library used by Node.js, Bun and Envoy. Fixed versions are out now.
