OpenAI launched Dots, and dot.com redirects to Grok
The domain dot.com was transferred to xAI in July and now sends visitors to the Grok app download page. Whether it is a prank is unconfirmed.

On the day OpenAI launched Dots, its always-on AI agent with a bubbly, blobby avatar, people noticed something funny. TechCrunch reports that the domain dot.com belongs to Elon Musk's xAI and currently redirects to the download page for the Grok chatbot app. According to the Whois domain registry, the domain was transferred in July.
What is known
- OpenAI launched Dots on September 29.
- dot.com redirects to the Grok app download page.
- Whois shows a transfer to xAI in July.
- The first to spot it was an anonymous X user who follows xAI, and the post went viral.
What is not known
TechCrunch asked xAI for comment and had no answer when the story ran. The company may simply have bought the domain for ordinary reasons. "Dot" could be seen as a typo of "bot", so grabbing it would catch mistyped searches. But TechCrunch points out that xAI does not own bot.com, nor other obvious typo domains such as vot.com, which is listed for sale. The internet's favorite theory is a prank: someone at xAI learned of the product name and bought the domain. As for dots.com, the closer match to the product name, TechCrunch says it belongs to a long-defunct company.
So the honest summary is this: the redirect is real and verifiable, the reason is unconfirmed.
Why it matters
Product names and domains are part of a launch. A well-funded rival owning the most obvious domain, and pointing it at its own product, shows how competitive the always-on agent market has become. It is also free marketing for the rival on launch day. Note that xAI's agent product is called Grok Bot, so the redirect fits nicely on a surface level.
Dany's take
My take: the name is part of the product. If you pick a short common word, expect someone to use it against you. Whether this was a joke or a coincidence, it landed as a joke, and OpenAI got the attention it did not plan for. Buy the obvious domains before you announce, and check who owns them.
