AMD to acquire Fei-Fei Li's World Labs for about $8.2 billion
AMD agreed to buy the spatial intelligence lab in an all-stock deal. Fei-Fei Li will become AMD's executive vice president and chief scientist.

AMD announced on September 28 that it signed a definitive agreement to acquire World Labs, the AI model and research lab led by Fei-Fei Li. The all-stock transaction is valued at about $8.2 billion and is expected to close by the end of 2026, subject to regulatory approvals and customary conditions.
What World Labs does
World Labs is based in San Francisco and builds spatial intelligence models. They generate, reconstruct and simulate interactive 3D environments from text, image and video inputs, and the company also develops technology for robotic learning and simulation.
What AMD says it gets
AMD says the deal brings a team of researchers and model experts that will deepen its understanding of how AI workloads are evolving, as AI expands into reasoning, robotics, simulation and physical AI. That insight, the company says, will help shape its future hardware, software and systems roadmaps and support its strategy of AI infrastructure for an open ecosystem.
After the deal closes, the World Labs team will keep working on model research. Fei-Fei Li will join AMD as executive vice president and chief scientist, reporting to CEO Lisa Su. Su said the team's "model expertise" will help AMD build the compute platforms for the next generation of AI. Li said joining AMD will give her team the resources and engineering depth to accelerate its research.
Why it matters
Chip companies usually sell hardware and leave model research to others. AMD is buying a leading research lab to learn directly what future models will demand from chips. That is a notable change in how the hardware race is run. Nvidia has a deep software and model ecosystem, and AMD has been looking for ways to close that gap. A prominent scientist in the chief scientist role also gives AMD credibility with researchers.
Dany's take
I read this as a bet on co-design: if you understand 3D and world models from the inside, you can design chips and software for them earlier. The price is high for a lab that is better known for research than revenue, and all-stock deals depend on AMD's share price. I also wonder whether World Labs will keep releasing work openly once it is inside a chipmaker. The closing date at the end of 2026 will tell us more.
